Trichomoniasis is an extremely common sexually transmitted disease and this is caused by a protozoan which is found within the vagina and the urethral tissues of a person. In many cases there are no trichomoniasis symptoms while in other cases some signs accompanying this condition can help in the diagnosis. As many as 174 million people worldwide are affected with this parasite every year.
Trichomoniasis is more prevalent in women as compared to men and the trichomoniasis symptoms are more commonly observed in women as compared to men. Among women the symptoms most commonly observed include vaginal discharge. This discharge may be yellow or green in color and in many cases the discharge is frothy or foamy. The discharge may also be accompanied by a foul smell.
Trichomoniasis symptoms also include vaginal itching and the woman may experience abdominal pain along with pain during urination. Around one third of women suffering from this infection may not have any symptoms at all. Among men no symptoms or signs may be observed. In other cases some symptoms may be observed and these include urethral discharge.
Women often tend to experience pain during sexual intercourse. In some cases bleeding following sexual intercourse may also be observed. Among women itching or soreness of the thighs and labia may also be observed. Diagnosis of this condition can be done through physical examination of trichomoniasis symptoms and also through a pelvic examination.
Trichomoniasis symptoms among men also include pain in the scrotum along with swelling. Men may also experience pain during urination. Pain during ejaculation may also be experienced. In some cases intermittent pus like or frothy discharge may be observed.
A sample collected through pelvic examination is viewed under a microscope. The treatment for trichomoniasis symptoms includes taking some antibiotics. The symptoms are normally observed around 4 days after sexual contact with an infected person. The infection cannot be contracted through contaminated surfaces like toilet seats or through sharing of towels.
